SmartThings works with the Amazon Echo range. By using the alexa.amazon.com Alexa app,
you can control the lights/bulbs, turn on/off the dimmers switches, and
a lot more other stuff. Alexa can also help you to check the status of
contact sensors and motion.
Note: Due to Security Reasons, Amazon Alexa only supports the Routines with switch, lightning, and thermostat devices
You can say ‘Alexa, Discover my devices’ or you can discover the devices by following the steps mentioned below:
In your Amazon Alexa App
If your Amazon Alexa does not start discovering devices, follow the given steps:
Wait until the discovery gets completed. The discovered devices will be listed under the ‘Devices’ and Scenes and Routines under the ‘Scenes’ in the Smart Home section of the Amazon Alexa app.
You can use the Amazon Alexa application to automate the devices, scenes, routines from your device. The Scenes and Routines will be displayed under the ‘Scenes’ tab of the ‘Smart Home’ section in the Alexa application.
So, follow these guidelines carefully and connect your Amazon Alexa device to Smart Things.

Get Started
- Download the ‘SmartThings Mobile Application’ for your iOS or Android device and create the account.
- Setup the Amazon Alexa and download the Alexa app.
Connect the Amazon Alexa with SmartThings:
In your Amazon Alexa app:- Click on the ‘Smart Home’ menu ( the home icon present in the Bottom Right).
- Scroll to ‘Your Smart Home Skills’ at the bottom. ‘
- Click ‘Enable Smart Home Skills’.
- In the search field, type ‘SmartThings’.
- Click ‘Enable’ for SmartThings.
- Login in your device or SmartThings account.
- Click on Login.
- Select your SmartThings Location from the menu.
- Click to Authorise.
- Once you are authorized, you will see a message ‘ Alexa has been linked successfully with smart things’ appearing on the screen.
- Click on ‘X’ to close the window and start the device discovery.
Discover Devices with Amazon Alexa
In the previous instructions, you gave alexa.amazon.com Alexa app permission to access the smart things devices. Now, Alexa is supposed to discover and locate the devices.You can say ‘Alexa, Discover my devices’ or you can discover the devices by following the steps mentioned below:
In your Amazon Alexa App
- Close the success message and after that Alexa Amazon Alexa will directly direct you to discover the devices.
- Click on ‘Discover Devices’.
- Wait until the device discovery gets completed.
If your Amazon Alexa does not start discovering devices, follow the given steps:
- In your Amazon App, click the ‘Smart Home’ menu.
- Click on the ‘Plus’ icon.
- Click to Add device.
- Choose ‘Hub’.
- Choose ‘SmartThings’.
- Click ‘Discover Devices’.
- Wait until the device discovery gets completed.
Wait until the discovery gets completed. The discovered devices will be listed under the ‘Devices’ and Scenes and Routines under the ‘Scenes’ in the Smart Home section of the Amazon Alexa app.
